On 13 August 1869, Paul Grohmann from Vienna and the local guides Franz Innerkofler and Peter Salcher reached the challenging summit of the Sassolungo – Langkofel (3,181 m) for the first time. The route taken by the first climbers does not closely follow the current “normal route”, which they only followed for a short stretch: their ascent route initially followed the Cengia dei Fassani before reaching the Sassolungo Glacier. They then ascended via gullies to reach the Amphitheatre and finally reached the summit via the ridge: undoubtedly a very difficult ascent for the time, with passages consistently rated between II and II°.
